Botox to Help Stroke Victims
05 11th, 2007 Author: admin
A year-long research study has shown that Botox can significantly ease the aftereffects of a stroke, helping victims return to a fully healthy lifestyle.
Up to 58% of all stroke victims suffer from Post-Stroke Spasticity, a condition caused by damage to the central nervous system where the muscles refuse to relax. This uncontrollable tension can be very painful, resulting in cramping, weakness, and restricted movement in the limbs. This can prevent stroke victims from walking, writing, or even eating on their own.
While there are oral medications to help treat Post-Stroke Spasticity, many patients experience extreme side effects while using them, including weakness, confusion, and dizziness.
The use of Botox on Post-Stroke Spasticity has shown positive effects in previous trials, leading Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to conduct the largest study yet, funded by Allergan, the pharmaceutical company that sells Botox. 279 stroke victims showed a significant reduction in pain and increased muscle control after receiving regular Botox injections. Best of all, the treatment shows no negative side effects.
Botox may soon be helping stroke victims return to a healthy, pain-free, and self-sufficient lifestyle.
