The Basics Of Cheek Implant Surgery

Prominent or heavy cheeks have always been considered a sign of beauty both in men and women. People with a good face bone structure are always the envy of others who are not as gifted. However, those who despair about poor facial structure can get their cheekbones enhanced by a cosmetic surgical procedure known as cheek implant surgery or cheek augmentation. It pronounces the cheekbones and adds a remarkable look to the face so that it leaves an imprint on one and all.

Cheek implant surgery lasts anywhere between an hour or two and is performed under general anesthesia. Once the patient is sedated the surgeon makes an incision near the top gum line in the upper mouth. The next step involves sliding the artificial implants through this incision and placing them at the right place. This is the method most commonly utilized all over the world.

Another method is to make an external incision near the eyes. This is generally done on patients with poor dental maintenance as the internal incision can get infected because of huge amount of bacteria. The external incision although is not that popular because it leaves a visible mark after the surgery.

The cheek implants are available in all different shapes and sizes to cater to the patient’s different needs. They are also available in different materials but the ones made of silicone are most commonly used. Polytetraflouroethylene is the second most common material. Although on the expensive side it integrates well with the internal tissue and prevents implants from shifting.

The surgery is very simple and sometimes is accompanied by risk of infection, post operative bleeding and swelling. 10 days is the normal recovery time and formation of blood clots is not uncommon. Cheek implant surgery is advised only if you are prepared enough to sport a new look that may or may not make you look better than before.
